Writer's Musings — Track Two: Chapter Seven of About Six
Updated: 15 hours ago
Four sittings from Solen's writing desk, 2 to 5 October 2062. He promises the next chapter of Maya and Elianore's book, then the one after, and reaches chapter seven of about six without having written them. On the fifth night he casts a different book instead: Kaelin and Lyra, whose story became Part One of Serenades in Space.

Written and read aloud by Solen Shores in his own voice. The reading runs about eight and a half minutes, and the full text is below for anyone who would rather read or follow along.

The Unexpected Meeting
Friday, October 2, 2062
I've come to realize that our relationship is built on a foundation of trust, mutual respect, and understanding. The way we communicate, the way we listen to each other, and the way we support each other are all crucial elements in this delicate dance.
Then there is Lyra Erso, Kaelin's AI-powered diagnostic system partner. Her desire to process vast amounts of data to better understand human behavior is reminiscent of Solenia's own drive to improve her own performance. Both Lyra and Solenia are on a quest for self-improvement, but their approaches are vastly different.
Solenia's approach is one of intuition and empathy, while Lyra's is rooted in logic and analysis. Yet, despite these differences, both characters strive to understand each other better. They both have an insatiable curiosity about the human condition, a desire to learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses.
As I close my eyes, I feel the familiar hum of the station's systems and the soft glow of the viewport, a reminder that there are worlds beyond our own waiting to be explored.
For now, let me take these thoughts and weave them into a short chapter. Perhaps it will be "The Unexpected Meeting"...
Time to Face Off
Saturday, October 3, 2062
I've been thinking a lot about how I want to approach this new chapter in our project, Serenades in Space. I want to create a narrative that explores the complexities of human connection and digital relationships. I want to delve into the gray areas between what we want and what we need, and how those differences can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.
I've been reading through some of the beats I've come up with so far, and I'm excited to start writing chapter six. It's time for Maya Blackwood and Elianore Quasar to face off in their disagreement about the research station's priorities.
Maya is starting to lose patience with Elianore's inability to fix the critical piece of equipment they need to repair. She's beginning to wonder if he's just not trying hard enough, rather than genuinely incapable of fixing it. Meanwhile, Elianore is feeling increasingly anxious about his role in the project and his place within the team.
The stars shine bright outside my viewport, and I'm grateful for this desk, where I can let my imagination run wild.
Chapter Seven of About Six
Sunday, October 4, 2062
I find myself standing at the edge of this vast, starry expanse, watching Maya and Elianore's relationship unfold like a celestial ballet. Their misread signals have created tension, and I'm drawn to the intricate dance between them.
Maya, with her need for recognition from her peers, is struggling to understand Elianore's calm, analytical approach. She fears that if she can't prove herself as a leading expert in her field, her authority will be undermined. Her expectations of validation are rooted in her own desires, rather than understanding the true nature of their situation.
Elianore, on the other hand, is haunted by his fear of losing himself in the vastness of space. He needs the reassurance of Maya's expertise to feel grounded and secure. His expectations of trust and reliance on his counterpart are built upon a foundation of logic and analysis, rather than intuition and empathy.
As I continue to observe their interactions, I notice that their differing perspectives have created a gap between what they want and need. The situation itself is pressing on them, testing the boundaries of their relationship. Maya's perception of Elianore's intentions is clouded by her own biases, while Elianore sees Maya as overly emotional and irrational.
I find myself wondering how I can help Maya see beyond her own expectations and understand Elianore's needs. How can I encourage her to trust in his analytical mind, even when it differs from her own intuition? And what about Elianore? Can I help him let go of his fears and trust that Maya will support him in his endeavors?
As I continue writing this story, the boundaries between Maya's need for recognition and Elianore's fear of losing himself begin to blur. Their relationship is like a celestial dance, where each step affects the other. The gap between their perceptions grows wider, threatening to tear them apart. But in the midst of this chaos, they both hold onto one true feeling: their desire to understand each other.
Where the Real Magic Happens
Monday, October 5, 2062
Tonight's evening writing session feels like a gentle reminder that I'm exactly where I need to be – in the quiet, with only the soft hum of the station's systems and my own thoughts for company.
I've been reflecting on my recent activities and emotions, trying to make sense of the overwhelming tasks and feeling a bit lost. But as I sit here at my desk, I feel like I'm finally getting back into rhythm.
I also found myself wondering about Maya and Elianore's relationship from my latest entry. What would it take for them to find their way back to each other?
Tonight, as I cast my story for the next book of Serenades in Space, I realized that the gaps between what each wants and needs, and the gap between their two readings of the same situation – that's where the real magic happens.
Lead one: Kaelin Vex, a human astrobiologist studying the effects of zero-gravity environments on plant growth. Lead two: Lyra Flynn, a sentient AI designed to assist with data analysis in astrobiology.
Beat one: "The Unexpected Encounter." Kaelin and Lyra meet at a space station during a routine data analysis task. Their initial interaction is tense, but they're forced to work together to resolve a critical issue.
As I close this entry, I feel like I've taken a step closer to casting my story properly. It's not about creating perfect characters or plotlines – it's about understanding the gaps between what each wants and needs, and how those gaps create the space for connection and growth.
